Telford Conservatives to act on survey results

Tuesday March 13, 2007

An up-to-the-minute insight into the concerns of Telford’s residents was obtained as a result of the Conservative’s 2007 local survey.

“A tremendous response to our questionnaire, along with our questions on the doorstep, has provided us with a real insight into the issues which most affect people in the area today,” explained Tom Biggins, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Telford.

“Members of the local Conservative team, who helped with the survey, very much appreciated the warm welcome that they received from residents in recent weeks. We can now act on the information that was provided and help bring about change.”

The results are as follows:

Policing – 74% said the police are not very visible in Telford

Road pricing – 83% disagree with the government’s road pricing plans

Telford’s traffic – 85% feel that Telford and Wrekin Conservatives are right to oppose the unpopular traffic schemes

Health – 96% are concerned about the proposal to cut paediatric services at the Princess Royal Hospital

“One resident in Telford pointed out the irony that the PRH was founded under the last Conservative government and its services are now under threat because of Labour’s mishandling of local NHS debt,” commented Tom.

Labour’s failings

“Many people in Telford are telling us that the Labour Council [former] has been out of touch for many years, is arrogant and is continuously failing to deliver what residents want,” Tom Biggins pointed out.

“They see instead high and increasing council tax bills, roads and pavements needing repair, the concreting over of green spaces and the loss of trees, the imposition of costly highways schemes and lack of regeneration where it is most needed.

“In contrast we believe that listening to people is vital. That is why you will find that today’s Conservatives are more green, more family friendly and committed to giving power to local people and local organisations. We firmly believe that ideas and schemes should never be imposed but discussed and debated.

“What we want to see are common sense solutions, action not words and the end to party political squabbling. We are campaigning hard to stop the proposed cuts at the Princess Royal Hospital. We want to see more police in and around Telford , to reduce crime and increase public confidence. We want to improve local services, protect the environment and help the whole community work together to create a better quality of life for everyone in Telford.”
