Historic gains in Council by-elections

Monday February 15, 2010
Conservative Council Leader, Andrew Eade, has welcomed two new Councillors into the Council’s controlling Conservative Group after making historic gains in February’s local by-elections.

There were Conservative victories in the College ward in Wellington - previously held by an Independent Councillor - and the Nedge ward in Telford, which was gained at the expense of the Labour Party.

The seat for College was won by David Chaplin, and the seat for the Nedge was taken by the current Chairman of Hollinswood and Randlay Parish Council, Councillor Harvey Unwin, who has been working proactively in his local area, particularly for youth services, and fought a hard campaign.

Councillor Eade said: “Both of the newly elected Councillors are very experienced in local government issues. They are exciting additions to our Group which is now heavily engaged in delivering a large number of service initiatives and regeneration projects right across the Borough.

“We are very grateful for the community’s support for our two able candidates which has helped strengthen the Conservative administration on the Council. The two by-election successes now give us overall control of Telford & Wrekin Council and the ability to drive home all of our much needed projects.”

Councillor Eade added: “I now urge the community of Telford to get behind our Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, Tom Biggins, who will give the Telford Constituency a great advantage with a change of Government at Westminster.”

“These were hard fought elections between the Conservatives and Labour. In the Nedge we took the seat off Labour by winning 42.5% of the vote, with the other parties trailing a long way behind,” reports Tom Biggins.
