No threat to free bus passes or TV licences

Wednesday September 23, 2009
Responding to recent queries on the doorstep, Tom Biggins, Conservative candidate for Telford, is setting the record straight on Conservative policies - particularly with respect to free bus passes and pensions.

“Claims, more claims and counter claims are an unfortunate and recurrent hazard of politics. But I should like to make it very clear that the Conservatives have no plans to cut pensions, or pension credits. Nor have we any plans to scrap free TV licences, free bus passes, or winter fuel allowances for elderly people,” said Tom.

“It is simply dishonest to say that we will cut any of these. Categorically, neither the Shadow Chancellor, George Osborne, nor David Cameron have ever said that we will cut pensions, or pensions credit, nor scrap free TV licences, free bus passes, or the winter fuel allowance for the elderly.

“I want to reassure local people that the Conservatives have no plans do to any of these things. In fact, we want to do more to help pensioners,” he explained.

“In some districts of Telford, like parts of Sutton Hill and Brookside, almost 40% of pensioners are living in poverty. We want to help them by restoring the earnings link, by freezing Council Tax for two years, and by providing £6,500 of energy saving measures for every household to cut energy bills.”
