Calling for an energy revolution
Conservatives have proposed urgent national economic policy measures to deal with Britain’s full-blown recession. But we cannot simply rebuild our economy as it was, heavily reliant on a few industries and on a narrow range of unstable and carbon-intensive energy sources. In January, the Conservatives launched a green paper setting out bold policies that will strengthen our economy, help guarantee energy security and protect our environment. Proposals include:
- Low carbon buildings, transport and commerce - including a new entitlement for every home to be fitted with energy efficient improvements.
- An electricity internet – computing intelligence will be added to electricity networks allowing demand and supply to be better managed, and paving the way for large-scale use of renewable energy sources.
- A system of feed-in tariffs – allowing payment of people who produce energy from renewable resources.
- A new national recharging network - to advance the replacement of traditional cars with electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
- New low carbon energy sources - such as biogas to replace residential gas heating.
