Time to cut taxes for savers and pensioners

Monday February 2, 2009
“The real losers of the current economic crisis are those people and families who have been thrifty and tried to save over the decades,” says Tom Biggins.

“Over the last 11 years, the current government has launched a sustained attack on any resident who has tried to save, or put money aside as a contribution towards a pension. A total of over £50 billion has now been grabbed from private pension funds, and many thrifty people who worked and saved hard all their lives are left with less than they expected and less than they need.

“In a further blow, the government has penalised savers still further by reducing interest rates to record low levels in an attempt to get us all to spend more. The result is that those that rely on interest to help pay their bills, particularly the elderly, are hit once again. There is nothing fair or moral in that.”

Conservatives have called for special help for these innocent victims of Labour’s recession. Under the Conservative plans:
  • Basic rate taxpayers would pay no tax at all on their income from savings, making them up to £7,200 a year better off.
  • The income tax allowance for pensioners would be increased, with age-related personal allowances rising by £2,000, helping them by up to £400 a year.
  • The package would be paid for by reducing the growth in Government spending by £5 billion. Instead of rising by £30 billion next year, the increase would be £25 billion. Spending on the NHS, schools, defence and international development would all be protected.
  • An estimated 1,794,860 people across West Midlands would benefit from these tax cuts.
We are asking for your support to help pensioners and savers during the economic crisis. Please download and complete our petition card and we’ll deliver it to Downing Street.
