New Year on top of the Wrekin
Tom Biggins celebrated New Year on top of the Wrekin in sub zero temperatures, along with well over a hundred other locals.“Arriving in good time, my determination to get to the top for midnight was spurred on by groups of other people who were also braving the elements and dressed warmly for the arctic conditions. The Wrekin was covered in mist, and the trees and vegetation were spectacular, completely white-over with frost,” says Tom.
“It was a terrific experience that I will remember for a long time and well worth the effort.
"The New Year was welcomed in with a great sense of euphoria and achievement with lots of good wishes, together with glasses of champagne and the singing of ‘Old Lange Syme’.
“As the chimes of Big Ben resounded from a portable radio, the top of the Wrekin lit up with fireworks which several people had brought with them. We could hear fireworks of every size and colour being set off all over Telford, but due to the weather conditions, this year we were unable to see them.
"I was really pleased to be there to see in the New Year for the third year running.”
Looking ahead to 2009, a possible election year, Tom said: “The Conservative Party are offering positive ideas to help keep people in work and in their homes. In these difficult times we offer change, optimism and hope for the people of Telford."
