Decisions needed now to deliver transport improvements we desperately need in Telford

Friday December 12, 2008
Yes, these are very difficult economic times, but this country can no longer put off the decisions necessary to deliver the transport improvements we desperately need. That includes taking steps to free up Telford and improve road and rail links to the town, said Shadow Minister for Transport, Theresa Villiers MP.

“In some cases this will mean making better use of the capacity we already have; in others, building new roads and infrastructure. It will also mean pushing ahead with Conservative plans for high speed rail,” she pointed out.

Tom Biggins, Conservative Spokesman for Telford, welcomed Theresa Villiers, to the town today (11th December) to a fact finding meeting hosted by TS International Freight Forwarders Ltd based at Halesfield. At the meeting, Tim Pryce, Managing Director, and Dave Alsop, Director, were keen to press home the problems facing the haulage industry, particularly with respect to fuel pricing and increasing road congestion. They were also fast to point out one of the major competitive disadvantages facing their business when they travel to the continent.

“Over 85% of trucks that come through Dover are foreign-owned, yet none of the foreign trucks travelling in UK and who use our roads contribute anything to the cost of their upkeep,” explained Tim Pryce. “This is in stark contrast to UK trucks travelling, for example, in France or Germany, where long-standing charges are in place in the form of compulsory tolls or payments based on the distance travelled.”

Theresa Villiers was abundantly aware of the issue and the extra burden: “I fully recognise the role and importance of the logistics industry in keeping the UK economy ticking over, and especially their role in providing us with fuel and food,” she said. “Even before the current difficulties, the UK haulage industry has been operating at a disadvantage compared with its counterparts in the rest of Europe - which must be stopped.

“One of our policy priorities will undoubtedly be to deal with this imbalance, to impose a payment, and restore a level playing field.”

Making Telford more accessible, on a macro and a micro scale, by road and by rail, and by considering imaginative schemes to ensure the rapid and easy transit of people and goods were at the heart of the meeting discussions.

These included proposals for a new road link from the A442 to the M54, to vastly improve traffic flow around Telford and free up capacity around the town centre, which is considered important and to be beneficial to residents and future communities living close to the centre.

Plans to extend the electrification of the railway beyond Wolverhampton and to significantly upgrade the train service to London to vastly reduce travel times were also seen as pivotal to the economic growth and future prosperity of the Telford.

Theresa Villiers concluded: “The Conservatives are serious about transport and clear about the benefits of high speed rail which could add £60 billion to the UK’s wealth, with £5.2 billion for Birmingham alone.

“A high speed network should free up space for more commuter services on existing lines, alongside more paths for freight, taking hundreds of lorries off our congested roads. A high speed rail could also help heal the long standing divisions in our economy by shrinking the distance between north and south, bringing more jobs and prosperity to our northern towns and cities.

“So often in this nation’s history new transport links have helped push forward progress and prosperity. In the 19th century it was the steam locomotive. In the 20th, it was our motorways and airports. In today’s world, I believe it can be high speed rail.”
