Randlay Post Office - Tom Biggins leaves no stone unturned

Friday November 7, 2008
Tom Biggins, Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Telford, has expressed his total frustration and anger that Post Office Ltd will not allow any locally funded rescue package to keep a Post Office service at Randlay, even one funded by Telford and Wrekin Council.

He has been told that providing a locally funded service in this location would have an unacceptably high detrimental effect on the sustainability of the Post Office network in the area and it would affect the viability of the remaining branches nearby.

Tom said, “Randlay Post office provides an irreplaceable service to local people. Even after the announcement of the final closure date, 6th November, I wanted to leave no stone unturned. Local people expect action from politicians not just words. They rightly expect local facilities to remain open – not closed down by the Labour government.

“I contacted Post Office Ltd to request that they allow a Post Office service to continue in Randlay. I began the process of behind the scenes negotiations with them as I had received interest in putting together a financial package to keep it going.  This would be local money to keep a vital service in the local community.”

In correspondence with Tom Biggins, Mark Wright, the Regional Development Manager for Post Office Ltd, finally closed the door on any prospect of a rescue package:

"I am unable to progress local funding for Randlay. Providing a locally funded service in this location would have an unacceptably high detrimental effect on the sustainability of the Post Office network in the area. It has been identified that, as a result of the closure, a significant amount of business is predicted to migrate to other Post Office branches. In the event of Randlay remaining open, this business would not migrate and the nearby branches would be less viable.”

Tom said, “This is very sad day. In spite of all our efforts, the Labour government have now succeeded in closing Randlay Post Office down. Post Office Ltd has ruled out completely any hope of using local money to keep this vital facility open. They will not allow Telford and Wrekin Council to provide financial help. They will not even allow an outreach service at Randlay – a service they have allowed elsewhere in Shropshire.”
