Threat to open space and footpaths at Randlay

Monday September 22, 2008
Tom Biggins, Conservative Candidate for Telford, has declared his support to keep land off Stirchley Avenue in Randlay open and accessible to all.

At the Full Council Meeting of Hollinswood and Randlay Parish Council, last night (22nd September) local people came along and voiced their concerns during public question time. They objected strongly at the way English Partnerships had fenced off land and put up signs saying “no access” on an area that has enjoyed public access for thirty years or more.

Tom Biggins said: “I attended the meeting and was shocked at the way English Partnerships has treated local people. One lady was visibly upset at what they have done. There was great anger that rights of way that have been established for over 20 years are now being blocked.

“Residents were saying that literally one day you could walk your dog over this land and the next you couldn’t. People are even being denied the use of the tarmaced footpaths with lighting that were refurbished not long ago.”

At the meeting a letter was read out from English partnerships which stated that they had fenced off the land to prevent motor cycle abuse, allow tree thinning and the grazing of ponies.

“People don’t believe this explanation,” argued Tom. “They fear that this is the start of the process by English Partnerships to build on this much valued open green space.

“I believe passionately that there is too much building going on across Telford. Green spaces that are so well used by the community need to be protected.

“I will do everything I can to support Hollinswood and Randlay Parish Council in their campaign to have the established rights of way recognised and to seek Village Green status for this area.

“It is vital to keep this much used and essential green open space with its trees and wildlife for future generations to enjoy.”
