Cameron makes landmark visit to Telford's Sutton Hill Estate

At a landmark visit to one of Telford’s housing estates at Sutton Hill, Conservative Leader, David Cameron, strongly endorsed Telford and Wrekin Council’s plans for robust renewal and regeneration.
Tom Biggins, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Telford, organised the visit to see around some of the rundown facilities and the houses built in the 60s which, with a life expectancy of 30 years, are clearly showing their 40-year-age.
“I’m absolutely delighted that David Cameron has visited Sutton Hill today. It has given me the chance to show him the real opportunities that exist to regenerate the area. The clear message that this visit gives to local people is that the Council and the Conservative Party are determined to get things moving and to improve the quality of life of everyone in this important area of the borough.”
An important part of the Cameron visit, the final leg of his three-day nationwide tour of key marginals, was an open and frank forum with Council leaders and around 20 local stakeholders held at Sutton Hill Community Centre.
The meeting included representatives of the Estate’s residents and tenants, as well as independent volunteer groups - Mind, Sutton Hill Families Project, Grandparents Action Group UK - and members of ‘Working for a better Sutton Hill’ group.
“Local people were genuinely delighted to have the opportunity to put their views over to David Cameron," explained Tom. “They were keen to highlight the poor quality of the local centre and a lack of leisure facilities, with few activities currently being laid on for young people. The deterioration in the local buildings and surroundings was considered to have had a knock on effect resulting in an increase in anti-social behaviour and the need for resident support services requiring long-term backing and funding from Government."
The talks lasted for over 15 minutes, with the Council Leader, Andrew Eade, and Cabinet Member for regeneration, Councillor Eric Carter, outlining their vision and plans for the Estate’s renewal.
Councillor Eade commented: “Mr Cameron’s visit was of immense significance to the borough and Sutton Hill in particular. His visit sends a clear message that the Council and the Conservative Party are quite prepared with the issues here and to make Sutton Hill a key priority for the new cabinet."
Tom added: “We held a most successful meeting at Sutton Hill at which David Cameron heard first-hand the heart-felt concerns of people who live and work in the area - but , more importantly, their hopes and vision for the future.”
