Randlay Post Office closure condemned by Telford campaigner

Tuesday August 5, 2008

The decision to close Randlay Post office, announced today (Tuesday, 5th August), has come as a severe blow and has deeply angered locals, particularly those who do not own cars and those who run small businesses in the neighbourhood.

“Unprecedented opposition to the closure of Randlay Post Office was backed by particularly strong arguments for its long-term preservation - on the basis of its residential locality, lack of any practical alternatives, as well as proposals for future development of the area,” said local campaigner, Tom Biggins, Conservative Spokesman for Telford.

“Having carried out a substantial ‘Save Our Post Office’ campaign and gained overwhelming public support to keep Randlay Post Office open, the news received today that it will now definitely close is simply devastating.  This decision is totally unjustified and will cause immense hardship for local people, particularly the vulnerable and elderly.

“Very clearly, Randlay is one of the busiest post Offices in Telford. It is situated in Mr Singh’s supermarket, and can be easily accessed both on foot and by car. This decision makes no sense at all and is nothing short of a tragedy. I feel very sad for both Mr Singh and his dedicated staff, and for everyone who has so loyally used the services of Randlay Post Office over the years.”

Backed by local residents and business people, Hollinswood and Randlay Parish Council and Telford and Wrekin Borough Council, Tom Biggins has been fighting hard for months to keep this valuable local facility open.

As part his campaign, Tom held a public meeting which was packed full of local people who were able to get their views over directly to representatives of Post Office Ltd and Post Watch. He also organised a post card campaign, encouraging hundreds of people to write in directly to Post Office Ltd, and a petition, as a result of which 1,800 signatures were presented at No 10 Downing Street.

“Like so many who have helped with my campaign, I felt that there was real hope of keeping this much used Post Office open, particularly when Post Watch took up the case in July and started the special review process.

“I am, therefore, extremely shocked that the overwhelming public support and massive strength of local opinion to keep Randlay open has just been ignored by the Prime Minister and by Post Office Ltd. Just as I was outraged over the double standards of the Labour MP for Telford who says he wants to keep Post Offices open in his own constituency, but voted in the House of Commons in March 2008 for the national closure programme to continue.

“Because this government is so determined to close another 2,500 Post Offices across the country, depriving thousands of people of a much used public service, I feel that our opinions have stood for absolutely nothing and have been trampled rough shod over.”
