Shropshire’s world famous china museum welcomes Royal visitor

Saturday July 19, 2008
Coalport China Museum, part of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, provided a right Royal welcome to her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra in July.

Already a regular visitor to Shropshire, HRH Princess Alexandra unveiled a plaque to mark the opening of the Museum’s latest attraction, the Kiln Experience, where visitors can experience what working in a kiln was like through the clever use of dramatic sound and lighting.

The feature adds to the many working demonstrations at the Museum and the stunning National Collections of Caughley and Coalport china. Produced down the centuries, in the magnificent old Coalport China works, magnificent ceramics in the most vivid colours, bright glazes and exquisite decoration were created in its heyday.

Tom Biggins, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Telford, spoke briefly with Her Royal Highness about this unique Museum attraction in Shropshire, and the importance of telling visitors the story of this important local industry.

“Her Royal Highness was very interested in how pottery is thrown and the many secrets of traditional ceramic production. She was also interested in the visitor experience and the number of people who visited throughout the year.”

Tom points out: “The unique importance of the Ironbridge Gorge as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution has been recognised with the awarding of World Heritage Site status. This puts the whole area, with its history, museums and attractions, all administered by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, on a scale of importance with the Pyramids.

“The tourism that has resulted direclty from people visiting Blists Hill, Coalport and all the other Ironbridge sites undoubtedly benefits not only Telford, but the whole of Shropshire. Important heritage sites like these should be valued and should never be neglected.”

The visit by HRH Princess Alexandra follows that of her grandmother, Queen Mary, who also made a visit to Coalport China Museum back in 1900.

Notes to Editor:

The Coalport China Museum stands on the site of the former Coalport China Works. The China Works occupied this site from 1796 to 1926, producing fine bone china. The Works opened as a Museum in 1976, to preserve the buildings and history of the site.
