Tom Biggins takes fight over Randlay Post Office to Downing Street

Tuesday June 10, 2008

Tom Biggins, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Telford, who has been leading the campaign to keep Randlay Post Office open, took his fight to the very heart of government when he delivered his petition to the Prime Minister at No. 10 Downing Street on Monday 9th June.

Tom said: “I’m fighting this proposal all the way. Literally thousands of people, many of whom are elderly, rely on this busy local service. Businesses on Stafford Park and Halesfield, together with other organisations, choose to use Randlay because it is convenient, is accessible and has good parking. This is a financially viable business that otherwise would have a sustainable future.”

After the successful public meeting that Mr Biggins organised in April, he delivered a letter to every household in the area. As a result, Post Office Ltd has been inundated by people writing in to object to the plans to close Randlay. Over 1,800 local people have also demonstrated their opposition by signing the petition.

I am not alone in fighting to save Randlay Post Office, both Hollinswood and Randlay Parish Council and Telford and Wrekin Borough Council are campaigning hard to save this valuable local Post Office and are also making representations to Post Office Ltd.

Tom said: “I believe passionately that if you want to make a difference, you start at the top. So on behalf of the thousands of people in Telford who use Randlay Post Office, I took my petition to the Prime Minister.

“I suspect that the Post Office has made a mistake in this instance. They have certainly failed to take into account future increased usage of Randlay, due to new and future housing developments in the area, not to mention the existing high usage of the Post Office by local residents and businesses, and the poor accessibility of the alternatives.

“If there is any justice over this issue people power will prevail and Randlay Post Office must be reprieved.”

The Post Office Consultation ended on 9th June 2008.
