Flood prevention measures in the spotlight
Flood prevention in Shropshire has once again hit the headlines, as the River Severn burst its banks in several areas, causing disruption and severe damage along its course.
Tom Biggins, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Telford, said: “In recent years the Ironbridge Gorge has suffered more than anywhere else in Shropshire as a torrent of water rushes down from the Welsh mountains and the river overflows. This has had a severe effect on many local residents and businesses whose properties have been inundated with dirty water.
"The cost of the clean up - both in financial and human terms - is colossal. In addition, local trade is decimated when the flood prevention barriers are put up and the roads closed."
Tom pointed out: “One solution to river flooding in the Ironbridge Gorge is to try and head off the increase in water flowing into the river Severn upstream. Nowadays less water seems to be absorbed in the Welsh uplands and in periods of high rainfall more water than ever flows into the tributaries of the river Severn, which itself soon becomes overloaded.
"A possible way forward that I would consider would be to create wet wash land north of Shrewsbury. This would form a natural reservoir to contain the excess water in times of high rainfall, and alleviate further flooding downstream.”
