Tom Biggins’ motion to fight Post Office closures receives unanimous support from Shropshire County Council

Friday February 22, 2008

A resolution to fight Post Office closure plans received total support from Shropshire County Council on 22nd February. Tabled by Tom Biggins, Shropshire County Councillor and Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Telford, the motion was accepted unanimously.

“Across the country, 4,000 Post Offices - a quarter of the network - have already closed and a further 2,500 are expected to close by 2009 as part of another round of closures,” said Tom Biggins.

“Local people are concerned that a significant number of Post Offices in Shropshire have already been shut down since 1999. I believe that any further cuts to a much used local service is intolerable.

“Post Office closures have a devastating effect,” explained Tom. “A closure causes immense upheaval and inconvenience because local people have to travel further to their next nearest Post Office.

“Hardest hit are the elderly, disabled and those most disadvantaged - whether they live in the countryside or a town.

“People often walk to their Post Office in their local centre. But no one is going to walk two or four miles further if these closures go ahead. At a time when we are all being encouraged to use more local services, to travel less and reduce our impact on global warming, I fear this Government plan will be forcing Shropshire people to travel more by car and bus just to get to the Post Office.”

“To make the existing Post Office network sustainable services need to be restored. Post Offices need to be given greater freedom to offer a wider range of commercial products. And, they also need to become more effective “one-stop-shops”.

“I therefore urge Shropshire County Council to do everything in its power to fight Post Office closure plans across Shropshire and prevent this hammer blow to those communities affected.”

The Post Office has announced that consultation on the next branches to be closed in Shropshire will begin on 1st April.
