Political history made in Horsehay by-election

Friday March 14, 2008

The Conservative victory at Horsehay, Lawley and Lightmoor on Thursday, 13th March 2008 made political history. After 34 years of Labour rule, the Conservatives now have overall control of Telford and Wrekin Council for the first time ever.

Having won 25 seats at the May 2007 local elections, the Conservatives were able to form a minority administration. However, with an additional seat gained at the Brookside by election in November, and now with the Horsehay victory, the Conservatives now have 27 seats and overall control.

Andrew Eade, Conservative Leader of the Council, said: “This victory has made political history in the Borough. I have been waiting for decades to see overall Conservative control of this council and now we have it.”

Tom Biggins, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Telford, said: “The result in the by-election reinforced the national trend that power is slipping away from Labour. While helping our new Councillor, Clive Mollett, during the campaign, it became apparent that Labour’s support is ebbing away in Telford.”

Clive Mollett, a local businessman based Horsehay, secured over 45% of the vote. He now joins Tracy Hope, the existing Conservative Councillor, already representing the Horsehay and Lightmoor ward.

Tom added: “I would just like to thank the electorate and everyone who helped make this ground breaking victory possible. It bodes very well for the future.”
