Sovereignty under greater threat

Thursday September 27, 2007

Tom Biggins, Conservative Parliamentary spokesman for Telford, has called upon the Gordon Brown to honour his commitment for a referendum on the new EU treaty.

“I don’t want to see the Prime Minister handing over even more of our country‘s powers to Brussells. On such an important issue, Gordon Brown should trust the people and give us a vote. The reality is that the new Treaty contains 96% of the same proposals as the rejected constitution,” Tom pointed out.

“Labour promised us a referendum on a Euro Constitution in their manifesto. But now they are breaking that pledge. They pretend the new treaty is not the same as the old Constitution that collapsed when French voters rejected it. But there is virtually no difference and most European politicians openly admit it.

Tom explained: “Even more of our sovereignty is about to be handed over to Brussells, as the Treaty will create an EU President; an EU foreign minister, in all but name, with a diplomatic service; a single legal personality, enabling the EU to sign treaties; new powers for the European Commission, Court of Justice and European Parliament; and 60 British vetoes lost to Brussells.

“We were promised a Referendum so that we can have our say. Telford residents have been denied the opportunity to vote on this crucial issue by Gordon Brown.  With 80% of the British public calling for a referendum, this is intolerable.

“If you want to play your part in making sure that Gordon Brown keeps his promise, then I hope you will offer your support to the cross party ‘I want a referendum’ campaign by signing the petition at www.iwantareferendum.com.
