A week in the life of Telford’s Tom Biggins, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman

Friday July 13, 2007

Bethan Casinelli, a pupil of Thomas Telford School, has spent an interesting few days of work experience with Tom Biggins, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Telford.

Bethan said: "Through work experience from my school, the Thomas Telford School, I was awarded the opportunity to follow Tom Biggins, a local councillor. My itinerary was a mass of occasions, meetings and events to attend; a very telling sign of the life that I would lead for one week and that Tom leads everyday!

“Day one was designed to ease me into the week; I spent the entire day at the Telford Conservative office, helping with office duties. One thing that surprised me looking at the recent local election results is how many people didn't vote at all, despite the availability of easy and time-saving voting methods.

“I delved into day two. It was a day devoted to political research to be reported back to Tom. The research was based on how Telford could be improved for young people by young people! It was great to see the ideas collected and collated. Some really useful, innovative and practical

solutions were suggested by a wide variety of local young people, and hopefully in the near future we could see some of these ideas put into action.

“I had expected canvassing and lots of it, and my expectations were fulfilled on my third day. This was not only great fun, it also helped gather information regarding the voting intentions of the general public, helping the Conservative campaign, an evening well spent! It also helped me, as it was a true insight into the research, promoting and persuading that has to be done on a day-to-day basis by people such as Tom Biggins.

“Of course, no true venture into politics would be complete without an election! On my fourth day I was lucky enough to go with the party to a by-election, happening in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The atmosphere of this event was incredible and the experience unforgettable.

“It became clear to me that politics is a multi-faceted job. However, my fifth day was to prove this to be more than true! I accompanied Tom Biggins to his business in Whitchurch. This really helped me to realise that people such as Mr Biggins work as councillors and politicans on a day-to-day basis, but their jobs don't stop there.

“The majority of local politicians do all their political work - as well as jobs elsewhere - in an impressive feat of organisation, commitment and time-management. Perhaps it is this variation in life that is why, so often, politicos are held up as key figures for the youth of today."

Bethan is 17 years old and lives in Madeley.
