Cameron pledges to save 24-hour paediatric service at Princess Royal Hospital
Tom Biggins, Parliamentary Spokesman for Telford, has been campaigning hard over the proposed cuts to the paediatric service at the Princess Royal Hospital. He was delighted when David Cameron, Leader of the Conservative Party, visited the hospital recently adding his own personal support to the campaign.
At the Hospital David stated his ambition to create a strong and growing National Health Service. His visit was part of a fact finding visit to hospitals to help formulate Conservative party policies for the Health Service.
Tom commented: “People want to have a full service and they want to bring children here when they are ill. The population in Telford is growing and people expect the National Health Service to be improving. It is essential that when children are ill they only have a few miles to travel. Shrewsbury is just too far away.”
David pledged his strong support to Tom Biggins’ campaign to keep the 24-hour paediatric service at the the Princess Royal Hospital and said: “Local people want things to get better, rather than be downgraded. I applaud Tom’s campaign and give him my full support.
“Under a Conservative government there would be a real focus on directing money to front-line service as well as much more trust being placed in local managers.”
Both David Cameron and Tom Biggins held a private meeting with hospital trust chief, Tom Taylor, and Chairman, Dr Margaret Bamford, before taking a tour the renal and paediatric units and meeting patients on the wards.
Both strongly support the aim of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust to gain Foundation Status.
David Cameron is the only party leader to have visited the Princess Royal Hospital.
