Telford Parliamentary Constituency
The Telford Parliamentary Constituency is compact with an electorate of over 63,000, and is situated in the heart of Shropshire, some 30 miles west of Birmingham on the M54 motorway.
The area has a rich industrial heritage from coal mining to metal working and pottery, and includes the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. These past achievements are celebrated in a series of major tourist sites. The Ironbridge Gorge area itself is now a World Heritage site.
Since its birth as a new town over 40 years ago, Telford has seen a high level of residential development and its population growth has come particularly from out the West Midlands.
It is the main commercial and industrial centre for the area. Manufacturing businesses make up 22% of the business sector, many of which are hi tech based enterprises.
The retail sector located in the town centre also plays an important part in the local economy and attracts visitors from a wide area.
The district general hospital, the Princess Royal Hospital, is located just outside the constituency.
The Telford Parliamentary Constituency falls entirely within the municipal jurisdiction of Telford and Wrekin Borough Council (unitary authority) and includes the following wards:
Brookside, Cuckoo Oak, Dawley Magna, Horsehay & Lightmoor, Ironbridge Gorge, Ketley & Oakengates, Lawley & Overdale, Madeley, Malinslee, The Nedge, Priorslee, St Georges, Woodside, Wrockwardine Wood and Trench.
